Defragmentation

Print

The process of copying and deleting files on a computer hard drive can cause files to be broken up into pieces and stored in numerous locations throughout the drive.  Defragmentation is the process of grouping fragments of files on the drive into single locations called contiguous blocks.  Having all the parts of a file in one location means that the hard drive will spend less time to seek during a read operation, which speeds up file access and the system in general.
