AR (Augmented Reality)

Augmented Reality (AR) is a technology that overlays digitally generated information such as images, text or 3D objects over a real world environment.  AR uses cameras, sensors and displays such as those found on smartphones to map out a physical real life space and then superimpose digital elements on to it.  Examples include video and camera filters such as those found on Instagram and Snapchat that add facial overlays and accessories to images and videos, the IKEA Place app that allows you to see what a piece of furniture might look like in your home or office using your smartphone camera, and the Sephora Virtual Artist app that allows you to sample makeup products on your smartphone using virtual face mapping.
